Magic Medicine was conceived as a traveler’s guide handbook for exploring psychedelic substances—the author, Cody Johnson combines historical knowledge with science to paint a holistic picture of the risks and benefits of psychedelic use in modern day medicine and culture.

The design features eclectically-stylized illustrations composed of vintage anatomical and botanical engravings. Each of substance entries feature custom botanical illustrations by Holly Neel inspired by the style of engraved manuscripts and field note journals.
The body of the book is set in Mrs. Eaves while the chapter titles, substance titles and glyphs were set in Brothers (both Emigré typefaces), the combination speaks to the curious historical and worldly nature of the content.
Call out notes were designed as an additional layer of information along the outer vertical edge and took advantage of the glyph set of the Brothers typeface.
