As part of the Motorbooks Complete series, Classic MG Cars provides a chronological model-by-model history of all the marque’s collectible production saloons and sports cars including the iconic postwar convertibles like the MGA and MGB, as well as latter-day takes on the classic MG formula, such as the RV8.

A curated selection of archival photography throughout the book unveils the spirited history of the MG cars. Photo by Francis M. R. Hudson.
Some of the spreads shown are from original concept presentations where we presented the idea of using full page chapter numbers set in Chronicle Display in stark black and white to work alongside images of historical relevance for the representative chapter. Photographer, James Mann contributed a series of shots featuring the MGA 1600 MKII including the photo shown on the front jacket.
Historical ephemera and advertising is injected throughout the book—from utilitarian manuals to more cheeky brochures and ads touting the safety fast lifestyle of MG ownership.
Detailed specification tables at the close of each of the chapters highlight key technical and performance data. A combination of Gotham Narrow, Chronicle Text, and Idlewild — all from Hoefler & Co. were used for the balance of pragmatic utility and distinct personality—complimenting the history of the MG legacy.
